Cookies are simple text files that the websites visited by the user send and record on the latter’s computer or mobile device, and that are then retransmitted to the same websites upon the next visit. Thanks to cookies, the website will remember the user’s actions and preferences (such as login data, chosen language, font size, other display settings, etc.), so that they will not have to be indicated again when the user returns to the same website or browses from one page to another. While browsing a site, the user may also receive cookies on his/her computer or mobile device from sites or web servers other than the one being visited (so-called “third party” cookies). Some operations may not be performed without the use of cookies, which are therefore technically necessary in certain cases for the website to run properly.

There are various types of cookies, which can be summed up as follows:

  • Technical cookies, i.e. navigation or session cookies strictly required for the website to properly run or to enable the user to access the contents and services needed.
  • Analytic cookies, which allow to understand how the website is employed by the users.
  • No information on the user’s identity or personal data is collected with these cookies. Information is processed in an aggregate and anonymous form.
  • Functionality cookies, i.e. used to enable specific site features and some selected criteria (e.g. language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided.
  • Third-party cookies, i.e. cookies from sites or web servers other than the one hosting this site, used for said third parties’ own purposes.
  • Profiling cookies, including those of third parties, i.e. cookies aimed at creating user profiles and used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user when browsing online.
